In this blog we’ll introduce each of the founders of Highway Ventures: Joe Comizio, Lane Patterson, and Dylan Terry. You’ll learn about their backgrounds, their journey to founding Highway Ventures, and a bit about their lives outside of work.

Joe Comizio 

Joe hails from Washington DC, where he is a proud graduate of Gonzaga High School. He earned a BA in Government & Legal Studies from Bowdoin College. Despite coming from a family of lawyers and starting his career in law, Joe quickly transitioned to the startup world. 

The bulk of his early career was spent working in sales roles at various tech companies. Joe then went on to work in private equity where he focused on middle market, buy side transactions at firms like Bainbridge Capital and Razorhorse Capital. 

In 2021, Joe earned an MBA from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business. Post-MBA, he joined MITRE Engenuity’s, where he was exposed to the world of federal lab commercialization.

Outside of work, Joe:

• is a baseball fanatic, with a growing interest in the local Arkansas Naturals team. Back in the day, Joe captained his baseball college team!

• bungee jumped the highest bungee in New Zealand while studying abroad there.

• has lived on both coasts of the US and traveled to four continents. 

  
  

Lane Patterson

Lane grew up in Denver, Colorado, and studied Business at Kansas State University. The first part of Lane’s career was spent in sales, working across the US, and also living in Oxford, UK. Highlights include selling the first ever softswitch to two major US carriers.

Having a front row seat in company building successes, Lane had the itch. He went on to found two companies in the telecoms software space, with a successful exit and scaled a startup into a market leader in the telephone numbering and fraud solutions industry.

After these successful startup, Lane transitioned into investing, with a desire to help other people grow and build businesses. That first brought him to Enterprise Ireland, the VC arm of the Irish Government, and then to MITRE Engenuity. 

Outside of work, Lane:

• is an avid biker, enjoying everything from bombing rock gardens to the biggest gravel races.

• founded an ice rink in Denver, and became a certified USA Curling instructor.

• is most proud of his family, and has grown up kids in Pennsylvania and New York.

  
  

Dylan Terry 

Originally from Wicklow, Ireland, known as the Garden County, for its natural beauty! Dylan earned his undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Business from Trinity College, Dublin.

Dylan’s career started in San Francisco, with Enterprise Ireland, the venture arm of the Irish Government. It was here that he was first exposed to early stage company building. He then went on to work for a number of early stage startups in AI and Community, across commercial facing roles. 

The Highway Ventures founding team convened in full for the first time at MITRE Engenuity, when Dylan joined to work with Lane and Joe. It was here they saw the opportunity within federal lab commercialisation. 

Outside of work, Dylan:

• loves to travel, and in the past two years he has been to Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Thailand, Vietnam, The Philippines, Hawaii, Arkansas and Ireland. 

• has his scuba diving license, and has swam with sharks, explored WW2 shipwrecks and seen many seahorses, turtles, and puffer fish.
